Director Patty Jenkins Says She's In Talks for 'Thor 2'

Director Patty Jenkins wouldn't comment when it was reported that she was in talks to take over for Kenneth Branagh on 'Thor 2,' but she was pretty chatty to Vulture at the NY premiere of 'Five' on Tuesday night. "I can't say, but yes," she said when asked about her possible negotiations for Marvel sequel. "I can't say anything definitive, but it's exciting to be in talks with them about it." What does the indie director -- who helped Charlize Theron win Best Actress for 'Monster' -- like about the Marvel world? "I think Marvel is really ballsy to think outside the box." More than 2.2 million hard-working, middle-class people in all 50 states depend on the entertainment industry for their jobs. They work behind the scenes in production, and in small businesses like equipment rental, transportation, construction and food service," Dodd said. He added, "Millions more people work in theaters, video stores, retail, restaurants and other businesses that depend on entertainment. For all of these workers and their families, content theft means declining incomes, lost jobs and reduced health and retirement benefits." 'Muppets' go back to the giant screen

Creating a feature pointing debut is daunting enough. Try dealing with a beloved children's property, too. That is what "Flight from the Conchords" co-creator James Bobin did when he signed onto helm Disney's relaunch of "The Muppets" for his first bigscreen outing. The film, which stars Jason Segel and Can Be, will introduce Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear and Animal -- last seen in the cineplex in 1999's "Muppets From Space" -- to an alternative generation if this bows November. 23."It's similar to receiving a household treasure to take care of because individuals love the Muppets a lot,Inch describes Bobin, a U.K. native who caught the interest of Hollywood like a author and director on "Da Ali G Show." "You clearly feel some pressure due to the load of responsibility of dealing with these (legendary) puppets."Disney is not the only real studio clearing from the spiderwebs from the dormant but timeless kids qualities. Fox found box office manna if this cut back "Alvin within the Chipmunks," that will spawn another installment this Christmas. Similarly, The new sony has already been continue having a "Smurfs" follow up following the little blue animals required in $135 million worldwide within their first 12 days. The most recent "Muppets" version loved an average studio start. In 2008, Disney executive Kristin Burr asked Segel towards the Burbank lot and requested the thesp, who had been branching into writing, if there have been any Disney qualities that sparked his interest. Segel, a Muppets fanatic, requested concerning the status from the figures produced by Jim Henson within the nineteen fifties and bought by Disney in 2004. Though there is a "Muppets" script going swimming Disney's development coffers, Burr gave Segel a tight schedule-ahead to pen a script together with his "Failing to remember Sarah Marshall" cohort Nick Stoller. (At that time, the happy couple were in postproduction around the Stoller-helmed Segel vehicle they authored together.)"He known as me around the clarify and stated, 'Do you need to write a Muppets movie beside me?A and that i stated, 'Of course,'?" recalls Stoller, who counts the myriad TV and film incarnations from the Muppets among his comedy inspirations. "We determined all the large story beats on that call. We understood we that to be able to relaunch it, we needed to address in which the Muppets happen to be.InchFozzie became a member of a Reno casino tribute band known as the Moopets, Miss Piggy grew to become an advantage-size fashion editor at Style Paris, Animal joined a Santa Barbara clinic for anger management, and Gonzo segued to some career like a high-powered plumbing magnate.Despite Burr's enthusiasm, Stoller and Segel's take did not catch fire until Wealthy Ross required Disney's reins last year and set "The Muppets" around the steps for success, certain that the household-friendly film might be used over the studio's many platforms. Nonetheless, the home noted for starting such tunes as Kermit's Oscar-nominated ballad "The Rainbow Connection," needed a helmer skilled at both comedy and musical genres. Enter Bobin, whose Cinemax comedy "Flight from the Conchords" grew to become a vital darling and Emmy nominee because of its unusual mixture of story and song."(Bobin) really knows how musicals operate in a profound way," notes Stoller, who befriended Bobin years back once the director demonstrated curiosity about among Stoller's scripts that eventually disappeared in the Hollywood radar. "Lots of his notes in my experience and Jason were about shifting the storytelling" for everyone the background music. For Bobin, who handed down Universal's raunchy laffer "Bridesmaids" to be able to direct "The Muppets," there's nothing worse than the usual forced transition into song."It is all about creating a song feel natural and absolutely as organic as you possibly can therefore it does not find yourself being an accidental joke once the song is beginning," notes Bobin, who started pointing for TV 16 years back for Britain's Funnel 4 before joining with Sacha Baron Cohen to flesh out Cohen's alter egos, Ali G and Borat. "Whenever you watch a musical done improperly, there is a horrible feel. When you are getting it wrong, it is extremely apparent it's wrong."Bobin introduced in "Conchords" star and composer Bret McKenzie, who authored most of the film's tunes. Younger crowd enlisted fellow countrymen like Ough Gervais to complete the celebrity cameo selection in order to infuse some "Englishness" into the property, which lensed within the U.K. from 1976-81.Still, what is a director like Bobin, most connected with edgy, sometimes sexually explicit Cinemax comedies, doing in G-ranked territory?"In lots of ways, contemporary comedy nowadays is on your journey to exactly what the Muppets was previously,Inch states Bobin, observing that his comedy sensibility transformed after fathering two children within the years since "Ali G." "It isn't cynical comedy. It's comedy with heart. Comedy can be quite generous and warm. 'Conchords' is extremely innocent and sweet as well as funny. It's not necessary to be mean to become funny. I believe the Muppets will always be charming, using their old-style jokes and puns." Contact the range newsroom at news@variety.com

The Growing Season 9 Hell's Kitchen Champion Is ...

Hell's Kitchen Following a competitive season featuring Elise's large mouth, Elise's feud with Barbara and much more incessant Elise drama, Hell's Kitchen finally crowned its new champion Monday evening. Did Elise meet her very own hype? Starting the 2-hour finale, Will Lustberg, Paul Niedermann, Tommy Stevens and Elise Wims were the ultimate chefs competing to snag the positioning of chef-p-cuisine at Gordon Ramsay's BLT Steak in NY City. Fall Preview: Get scoop in your favorite coming back shows Taste It, Now Allow It To Be Challenge They needed to re-produce a dish in 35 minutes after tasting it once. The dish: Cod covered with prosciutto with mushrooms, kale and cream. Tommy mistook prosciutto for serrano pork, while Elise and can fired the incorrect seafood. Like a prize, Paul and the brother Chris reached spend time in the Dodgers game and scarf lower Dodger dogs as the nonwinners needed to clean their nasty, nasty quarters after which prep for that night's service. Dinner Service It had been an evaluation of leadership tonight, so each chef had an opportunity to lead the pass: Paul - He's really a great communicator and demonstrated "why he's a large deal" through getting dishes out in due time and catching Tommy's undercooked seafood. Regrettably, he did not notice the standard Control test when shrimp was subbed for lobster within the capellini. (Other people get hungry at this time? I'd eat that mistake. Shrimp is okay. I am much less fancy.) Also, Tommy's waffling around the seafood station presented Paul's crazy yelling side, to the stage that even Elise said onto it. Tommy - He's infamously bad at leadership and speaking despite his insistence that he's "articulate and thorough" calling out tickets. There' were many garbled messages returning and forth, however the remaining three got the meals out. Younger crowd skipped the sabotage when filet was positioned on a ticket without having to be around the menu. He known as it and confused his crew, who needed to simply tell him it had not been around the menu. Elise - Ms. Large Mouth was proficient at telling what she would like, and despite missing one Qc test, she caught the parsnip puree subbed for that potato mash. She'd some friction with Tommy when he presented her with seabass that looked "chewed because of your dog" that he responded, calling her "babe," but overall, she did set up, without having to shut up. Will - Previously he's been a reliable, relatively level-headed leader and began off by catching the lamb sabotage. Regrettably following a couple of of Elise's mistakes, he implied the "shady female" was trying her very own little bit of sabotage." Before long, exhaustion occur and also the remaining chefs stopped reacting when Will would on-site visit tickets. Even Chef Ramsay noted the team was working against Will. Hmm ... Throughout elimination, Chef Ramsay did not even give Tommy the opportunity to defend themself before giving him the boot. The only real surprise is the fact that he survived such a long time. Nonetheless, we'll miss his cool, wacky personality. You want him and the 18-year-old true love the very best. And despite getting probably the most entertaining drama towards the show this year, Elise fell just lacking which makes it towards the Final 2. Naturally, she cried, and all sorts of the men needed to offer her words of support to buck her up. Adios, Elise. In some way, we do not think this is actually the last we'll see (or hear!) individuals. BLT Tryout Menu Challenge Paul and can had 1 hour to produce five dishes which have the opportunity to show up on the BLT Steak menu. Five chefs needed to pick a sea food dish, salad, seafood dish, bone-in ribeye along with a filet of beef. These were all tangled up -- Paul obtained for his mixed vegetables salad and branzini, while Will obtained for his seared scallops and ribeye with gruyere -- before final dish. Will's boldness together with his grilled filet with buttered the city sprouts and black truffled taters with grapes won ultimately. For winning, Will got available the coming back participants for his sous chefs. Although he selected Tommy, Natalie and Jennifer for his or her talents, he selected Krupa so Barbara could be stuck on Paul's team together with her enemy Elise. Younger crowd came Elizabeth and Jonathan. Will I smell sabotage? Final Dinner Service Will - He began out strong because of Natalie on applications, however he started to regret his means of picking Krupa, who had been under competent on seafood. Eventually Nat changed her on that station, and she or he was shunted to desserts. A vintage exchange: Natalie prodding a seafood: "What exactly is it said to be?Inch Krupa: "Cooked." Nat needed to catch support from Krupa's insufficient prep but Will's service eventually returned back. Paul - His kick-off would be a little shaky, because of Elise flubbing her first application, including setting a pan burning. Chef Ramsay was in explaining her as resilient though, and she or he was known as upon to drift from station to station to help the relaxation from the brigade. Captain Save a 'Ho to save the day! Paul highlights he's the only real chef to obtain Elise and Barbara to operate harmoniously (well, slightly less discordantly) together. No mean task, that. And also the Champion Is ... Right now of truth, Will attempted to show the doorway handle ... and also the door did not open. Champion to Paul, who, announced, "Holy s---!" upon winning. Both were worthy rivals, so well performed, men. Are you wishing that Paul won? Did another person deserve it more? Are you currently glad that Elise did not reach the finals?

Saoirse Ronan and Alexis Bledel Are Just As Confused by Their New Film as You Are

The synopsis of Precious screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher’s feature directing debut Violet and Daisy sounds straightforward enough: “A brutal fable about a pair of teenage assassins, played by Saoirse Ronan and Alexis Bledel, who believe they’ve landed a straightforward assignment but soon find themselves thrown off their game when their latest target isn’t who they expected.” Evidently, however, that’s not quite what its audience — or even its stars themselves, for that matter — seemed to take away from its Toronto Film Festival premiere. According to the LAT’s Steve Zeitchik, who caught the confounding screening, it went a little like this: Overflowing with whimsical dream sequences, cryptic symbolism and surrealist touches (the main characters tool around on a tricycle), Violet & Daisy features flavors that won’t be to everyone’s taste, and it’s hard to imagine a major distributor taking a flier on it. But even its detractors will concede the film has a degree of style and ambition. […] So bizarre are some of the scenes in Violet & Daisy that at the post-screening Q&A Thursday night, even the actors there to support the film said they found themselves experiencing moments of confusion. “I came in with lots of questions,” Bledel said, “and I still haven’t gotten any answers.” To a query from one member in the audience, Ronan jumped in with: “There are so many bizarre things in this film, so many things left open, it might be better off not to ask questions.” (Her remark prompted Cameron Bailey, the festival co-director who was moderating the session, to quip, “That kind of ruins the Q&A.”) Don’t feel bad, ladies! That’s TIFF for you. I’m still waiting for people to come around on What’s Wrong With Virginia? Give it a couple years, something will work out. · Toronto 2011: An Oscar winner takes an un-Precious turn [LAT] [Photo: Getty Images]

Jane Lynch: I Can Sleep Now That Emmy Show Is Near

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Jane Lynch is no longer losing sleep over her Emmy hosting duties. Im OK, the Glee star affirmed with a smile on Wednesday morning after rolling out the red carpet in front of the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. I actually slept OK last night for the first time in about a week. Ive been having some anxiety issues. Lynch has been hard at work backstage on the show with longtime pals Jill and Faith Soloway from Chicago. The trio previously worked together on Annoyance Theatres The Real Live Brady Bunch in the 1990s. (Lynch played matriarch Carol Brady.) The first-time host promised that the Chi-Town ladies would bring kind of a Chicago feel to Sundays 63rd annual Primetime Emmy Awards. Jane is certainly going to be central to our experience, said Academy of Television Arts and Sciences chairman John Shaffner. I think the host of a program like this is the best friend who sits on the sofa and tells you great stories as the evening goes on and comments on the work. Shes here to keep us engaged in that way as a best friend. Lynch has won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her performance as Sue Sylvester on Glee and is up for another Emmy this year. She was the first choice of executive producer Mark Burnett to host this years show. The Apprentice and Survivor mastermind said he voted for the 50-year-old actress to lead the show even before clearing it with his alliance. My only choice I wanted was Jane Lynch, said Burnett. I had not yet gotten permission to ask her from the Academy or Fox. I ran into Jane on a plane. We were both coming back from the upfronts in NY. I just went over to her and said, I have no permission right now, but if I can get permission, would you host the Emmys for me? Copyright 2011 by Associated Press.
