Three Actresses Battle for One Shot With Tom Cruise, and 5 Other Stories You'll Be Talking About Today
Also in this Monday edition of The Broadsheet: The Lone Ranger’s big budget gets one explanation… Austin Powers 4 may not be as close to happening as you hoped (feared)… Kevin Smith’s last film will actually be two films… and more ahead. · If it’s Monday, it’s time for another Hollywood shortlist. Per THR, actresses Hayley Atwell, Rosamund Pike and Alexa Davalos are testing with director Christopher McQuarrie to star opposite Tom Cruise in One Shot. The adaptation of Lee Child’s 2005 thriller focuses on six-foot-five ex-cop-turned-drifter Jack Reacher (Cruise), a sniper accused of murdering five people, and the tough daughter of a district attorney (one of the actresses). Brit Marling was also on the wishlist, but was knocked off due to scheduling problems. Considering her performance in Captain America: First Avenger, here’s hoping Atwell gets this role and every other role she’s up for in the next five years. [THR/Heat Vision] · One possible explanation for the reported $250 million production budget on the now possibly defunct Disney reboot of The Lone Ranger? Werewolves. Jeffrey Wells wrote that he received the 2009 version of the script by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio (Pirates of the Caribbean) and found that Lone Ranger would have featured Tonto (Johnny Depp) trying to stop a Native American “wolfbeast [from] tearing victims apart and leaving a bloody mess.” Revolutionary Road writer Justin Haythe did work on the script after 2009, so it’s unclear how much of the werewolf stuff remains. Also unclear: whether or not Disney will shut down Lone Ranger. As a source told Deadline, “Let’s see how it all shakes out on Monday. There’s always a chance that it could go. You never know until you know.” [Hollywood-Elsewhere, Deadline] · Speaking of, “you never know until you know”: Despite rumors to the contrary, Deadline reports that Mike Myers has yet to sign a deal to bring back Austin Powers for a fourth time. [Deadline] · It looks like Kevin Smith’s final film is actually two films. During a Q&A in Montreal for Red State, Smith revealed that the hockey dramedy Hit Somebody will be split up, a la Kill Bill: part one will focus on the rise of a Canadian hockey player; part two on his time in the NHL.
